This year the Guild has been invited to participate in the seventh annual Collaborative Artists show displayed at The Museum of Contemporary Craft  in association with Art In The Pearl. The goal of these collaborations is to get artists to explore new things, perhaps work in a different media or look at their work from another artist's point of view. Curated by Greg Wilbur, artists are asked to stimulate their creative energy by making work together. Fifty percent of sales from this project go to Sisters of the Road Café, a Northwest Portland Café that serves meals to people regardless of their ability to pay and also is a safe and pleasant place for people to spend time. The festival is rated one of the top 10 art festivals in the country, featuring some of the  most talented artists from the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Admission is free.

August 9th & 10th, 2008

The Pacific Northwest Woodturning Guild is hosting an innovative and, we hope, exciting, event called “Exploring Art and Woodturning.”  The goal of this event is somewhat unusual: it is directed towards woodturners who are struggling to find their artistic voice, or are stuck in a rut in terms of what they create, and those who perhaps have not even thought about or explored the artistic possibilities that lie in front of them.

The PNWG has arranged for two very fine artists/woodturners to provide the overall creative drive and direction for this event.  They are Jim Christiansen from Moscow, ID and Bill Moore from Portland.  Both are excellent woodturners and artists in their own right.  They will assist the PNWG in critiquing both our own works and the works of our fellow turners who are attending.  In addition Jim and Bill will discuss a significant number of their own creations, sharing their insights in to their motivations, their decision making, and the artistic rationale behind their work.

The PNWG will also provide a large amount of tools and materials for participants to use and incorporate into their work at this event. The tools will include lathes, carving tools, and sandblasting equipment. The materials provided will include wood, metal, yarn, glass, feathers, rocks, and paint.  In addition, participants are encouraged to bring any materials, unfinished works, finished works or any other thing that they feel would be relevant to the event and their work.

The event will take place at Dale Larson’s shop in Gresham, OR

The cost for the event is $150 and will include lunch and dinner on Saturday and lunch on Sunday.

Due to the size of Dale’s shop, we must regrettably limit the attendance to 25 participants (not including Jim, Bill, and Dale). We already have 19 participants, so we have six available places for other woodturning club members and therefore will be inviting three from Cascade Woodturners and three from Northwest Woodturners. Places will be allocated based on the date/time when we receive checks from these club members.

If the event is as successful as we hope it will be, we will scale it up to permit a larger number of participants.

If you have any questions, please address them to Doug Brown, (dougbrown@woodturningguild.com, 503 774 5701)

or Jerry Harris (jerryharris@woodturningguild.com, 503 244 6921).

John Mosher Lamb April 19, 1931-December 21, 2006

December 21, 2006

The members of the Guild were all sad to hear of the passing of our good friend and colleague John Lamb. John had been battling cancer for months. John was one of the founding members of the Guild and contributed a lot of his time to establishing the certification program. John was born in Seattle WA in 1931 to Edwin and Vincenta Lamb. He moved to Astoria Oregon when he was a few months old. John graduated from Star of the Sea high school in 1949, went to Mt Angel Seminary and left there after two and a half years.  John got his BA in ’54, MS in Psychology in ’59 at University of Portland. He worked as a Psychologist for Rainier State School in WA, Oregon Fairview Home, and Portland Public Schools.  In 1960 John joined Tektronix, Inc. as a Consultant in Human Resources.  At retirement in 1983, he had moved up in rank to HR Manager for the Information Display Division (@ 2500 employees)

John was married to his college sweetheart in 1954.  Together they had 12 children, 6 boys and 6 girls. John was an avid hunter, and every deer and elk season provided him and opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and spend time with his family and friends.  John started woodworking by making toys for his children.  As they grew older his kids wanted night stands, book cases, aquarium stands.  When they began to leave home, they wanted coffee tables, end tables, hi-fi stands, and with their marriages and grand kids came the need for cradles, cribs, changing tables, dressers. As the demand for furniture waned John started turning wood for his own pleasure.  He found a book by Dale Nish titled “Creative Woodturning” which became his tutor and inspiration.  John was hooked on turning from that point on. John was an active member of Northwest Woodturners, Cascade Woodturners, AAW, as well as a founding member of Pacific Northwest Woodturning Guild where he chaired the Standards Committee. John has demonstrated woodturning and had his work exhibited and sold in many galleries throughout the Northwest.

John is survived by is wife of 52 years, Jane, his children, Daniel, Karen, Kevin, Sarah, Jim, Pete, Liza, Teresa, Steve, Catherine, and Angela, 14 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, and his siblings, Theresa O'Hanlon, Beatrice Carriere and William Lamb. John was preceded in death by his son Tom. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Hillsboro, Oregon
